Domino's Pizza (UK) Defies Recession

15 Jan 2010 - Domino's Pizza, the UK's biggest pizza delivery company, remains recession-proof as the company announces surging sales despite the continuing sluggish economy.

The Britain's Got Talent sponsor reported impressive growth with a like-for-like sales lift of 8.6% at its 501 mature stores in the three-month period ending 27 December 2009. As a result, like-for-like sales growth for the full year was 8.4%.

Overall sales for the quarter grew by 15.6% to £112.4m thanks to a growing number of outlets and a focus on short-term promotional offers and online sales.

This online focus was particularly fruitful. Internet orders soared with sales up 40.4% to £78.5m for the year. E-commerce now accounts for more than a quarter of Domino's UK delivered sales, a decade after it was first introduced at the firm.

Chris Moore, chief executive, said: "In 2009, and in particular due to an exceptionally strong final quarter, we have outperformed our predicted like-for-like sales, improved our margins and opened more stores than anticipated.

"With this in mind, I am delighted to announce that the Company will deliver full year 2009 profits comfortably ahead of current City expectations."

Domino's opened 55 new stores during the year, creating 1,500 jobs and bringing the total number of outlets in the UK and the Republic of Ireland to 608.
