Mosquito Squad (US) Awards Indonesia Master Franchise

01 Jun 2018 - After launching in East Africa earlier this year, tick and mosquito control franchise Mosquito Squad added another international deal to its development lineup, this time in Indonesia.

Master licensee Cecilia Wirawan and husband Louis Mahadi will spearhead initial operations in the Southeast Asian nation through their company, Pt. Multi Niaga Harvest. Mosquito Squad’s services will initially be offered on the island of Java, in and around the capital of Jakarta, and then expand throughout Indonesia in the years ahead.

Chris Grandpre, CEO of Mosquito Squad parent company Outdoor Living Brands, said Mosquito Squad targeted international growth as a priority about two years ago, when “we began to get serious about building a pipeline for international.”

“We feel as though we have enough size and scale now here in the U.S.” to support expansion abroad, said Grandpre when I spoke with him about the brand’s first international deal with Kenyan franchisee Fred Rariewa.

Grandpre noted Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean were target regions for global growth, putting the recently announced master license agreement for Indonesia in line with that strategy. Indonesia, with its dense, tropical climate and forested land, “suffers a great deal of insect-borne illnesses and is in urgent need of results-driven efforts that can eliminate the spread of mosquitoes throughout the country,” said Grandpre.

Like Rariewa, who was infected with malaria as a child, Wirawan and her husband both know firsthand the life-threatening impact of mosquito-borne diseases. Wirawan suffered dengue fever three times, Mahadi twice, and they have watched one of their sons suffer from dengue as well. Those struggles, paired with Wirawan’s business experience as the licensor of the KiddyCuts system with approximately 30 locations in Indonesia and in leading her family's match business, the largest match producer in Southeast Asia, led them to launch Mosquito Squad in their native Indonesia.

“With more than 15 years of experience of assisting entrepreneurs operate under KiddyCuts licenses and a diverse background in business leadership and development, we wanted to use our expertise for a new venture that would make a difference in communities across Indonesia,” said Wirawan. “With dengue fever, malaria and zika remaining concerns in Indonesia, there's a serious need for the lifestyle and disease prevention services Mosquito Squad provides. Louis and I are thrilled to launch operations in Indonesia and proud to join the company's efforts to educate and prevent the spread of insect-borne illness throughout Southeast Asia.”
