About the market
Franchising in Sri Lanka has been growing at an incredible rate for the past 10 years. Sri Lanka offers colossal potential for foreign and local franchisers who tailor their brand to fit into the dynamic consumer market in Sri Lanka. Franchising fits well in Sri Lanka’s current growth and urbanizing trends. World class shopping malls such as Colombo City Centre, Marino Mall etc. which are hubs for franchises have mushroomed in the country’s affluent metropolises. Further, the country is witnessing a demographic transformation with the gradual increase of personal disposable incomes among the urban classes. This has led to a consumption boom in the last decade. Further, this has resulted in a demand for higher quality, branded products, which franchises are keen to deliver.

Geographically, Sri Lanka is situated strategically at the crossroads of major shipping routes to South Asia, the Far East and the continents of Europe and America, making the country a convenient port of call for shipping lines and airfreight services.

With GDP expansion close to 4% in the current fiscal year, Sri Lanka experiences a fast economic growth with its huge market of potential customers making it seriously appealing to foreign businesses. In Sri Lanka there is a growth in the group of competent entrepreneurs and potential investors who know that the franchise is a relatively low risk and high return business model.

They are aware that they will gain an established system and years of knowledge from the franchisor along with training and support.

Because of the Sri Lankan government’s recent slackening on foreign direct investment numerous multinational businesses such as Ritz Carlton, Shangri-La, Subway, SPAR, and Decathlon have been considered Sri Lanka as a smart place to expand.

However, the Sri Lankan franchise market which includes more than 200 franchise systems is dominated by American and French brands. Food and beverages is in fact the largest sector in the franchising industry, with quick service restaurants being the fastest growing format. This is not surprising, since the restaurant industry is among the oldest and the most successful trades. Other strong trades are fashion retail, Education, Hospitality etc. The situation has started changing now and opportunities are available in diverse sectors of the economy and many Asian franchisers are entering into the market. New franchise concepts are opening all the time, Franchisers either find franchisees in Sri Lanka directly, or through master franchisees. Big opportunities are available for all industries to capture the market and this interest shows that Sri Lankan Franchise market is mature and open to franchises from other countries since franchising have been considered the most successful business venture currently in Sri Lanka.
