Mathnasium (US) Continues International Growth
14 Jan 2020 - After a 12-month period that exceeded all expectations, global tutoring franchise Mathnasium has unveiled plans to grow its Aussie network tenfold.
Launching with one learning centre in New South Wales last year, the math-only children’s learning and tutoring franchise took a cautious approach to the domestic market. However, one year on, Ratika Khandelwal, Mathnasium director reveals that the response has been so strong, it’s all systems go for East-Coast expansion.
“Starting the franchise in Australia has certainly exceeded our expectations, to the point we are opening the second Mathnasium centre later this month,” she told Inside Franchise Business.
“We are hitting enrolment milestones on par with high performing centres in Canada and the United States, so we are pleased with our progress. We realise the immense potential in the education and learning industry and it is proving its worth early on.”

While the brand is new to Australia, Mathnasium has quickly become a household name overseas. With more than 1000 locations globally, the tutoring franchise’s suite of specialised learning techniques are garnering incredible results, and it’s a similar story Down Under.
“We are witnessing how an improvement in mathematics is enhancing their confidence in school and learning in general, which is wonderful and heartening to see,” Khandelwal said.
“The concept has also had a very good response from local schools, both public and private, that realise how we enhance learning opportunities and improve problem solving skills for students. We have been very involved in supporting the schools as part of our local area marketing and community building activities.”
Mathnasium Australia growth
In addition to the recently-announced second learning centre, Mathnasium is preparing for an enormous 2020. Khandelwal revealed that Australian market offers an opportunity for extensive growth, with the franchise already putting plans in place to capitalise.
“To be honest, we only see opportunity for Mathnasium in Australia,” she said.
“Our goal is to open about 10 to 15 new centres across NSW and ACT by 2021, with expansion in other states as the concept and business opportunity gains more awareness and momentum.”
Khandelwal isn’t alone in her thinking. A growing disparity between Australia and other developed nations with regard to numeracy is a cause for concern. The latest NAPLAN result have indicated Aussie kids may be falling behind, opening the door for tutoring business to achieve further growth.
“For the first time, Australia failed to exceed the OECD average in maths, which will inevitably lead the government to want to increase the skills of students,” Khandelwal said.
“There is a major focus on maths and education happening in this country with schools focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) learning and improving NAPLAN levels. We feel the timing is ideal for this concept right now.”
The new Mathnasium Australian growth is set to come quickly, with new locations already in the works for this year.
